When talking about the importance of technology in medicine and therapy, a recent event was a real shock. The Food and Drug Administration approved a game for therapeutic purpose. Sounds crazy right? Maybe, but you will need a prescription from your doctor for EndeavorRx because it is made to help treat kids with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
The players have to follow a path with obstacles and enemies. Depending on the level, they have to catch only blue enemies and avoid yellow and red ones for example. The idea is to keep focus on one task which is a problem ADHD kids struggle the most and transfer these skills in real life situations. Players get awards for passing the levels and the game is designed in a fun and entertaining way.
The game developed by Akili Interactive Labs is an addition to the medication therapy and it is only one useful tool to practice behavior.
There is a rumor that game designers paid a study in their benefit and this raised a lot of questions. The study said that there was a visible improvement in objective attentions in kids who played the game, but because of the rumors you can’t be certain in credibility of the study.
But all the negativity aside, you have to admit that the idea is great. Games are fun and occupy or attention in various ways. And this may be the therapy without side effects, right? If you want to try this out, check in the Akili’s waitlist and consult your pediatrician.
